Challenge
This short Storyline course was designed as the first segment in a larger course about backpacking and wilderness safety. The challenge was to introduce new campers and backpackers to important practical concepts in an accessible and engaging online format.
Solution
This mini-course introduces Leave No Trace principles, explains why food and waste management is so important while camping in backcountry areas, and gives learners the opportunity to think through packing and food management decisions that could affect their safety while hiking in bear country.
Results
At the end of this mini-course, learners will be equipped to decide which items from their backpack are safe to keep in the tent at night, and which should be stored in a bear bag or food locker. The next unit outlines several options for safe overnight storage (bear bags, bear canisters, etc), and explains the pros and cons of each.
