Challenge
Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities in the United States. Deaf and hard-of-hearing employees face a number of challenges with communication at work. But many hearing managers and coworkers are uncertain how to create a work environment that facilitates productive communication between hearing and deaf or hard-of-hearing coworkers. This can be a particular challenge in both in-person and virtual meetings. Communication can easily break down and information can be lost if participants are not familiar with one another's communication needs.
Solution
This interactive 15-minute eLearning course provides a brief overview of some of the challenges facing deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the workplace. It walks learners through several practical, straightforward recommendations that they can implement right away in order to facilitate productive communication in-person or virtual meetings with deaf and hard-of-hearing participants.
Results
Busy managers, supervisors, and coworkers can learn the basics of effective communication with deaf or hard-of-hearing coworkers in just 15 minutes. There is also a 1-page accompanying job aid, which participants can print and refer to later.
