Job Aid: Impact of Traumatic Separation

Tools: Canva, Thinkific LMS

Client: The International Rescue Committee

Collaborators: Subject Matter Experts with experience providing social services to unaccompanied minors

Challenge

A nonprofit organization hired a large number of youth social service caseworkers to support Home Study and Post-Release Services for unaccompanied minors. HSPRS trainers quickly assembled materials and put together a self-paced online training course with modules on various social work and immigration topics. However, the first version of the onboarding program did not include any written materials that trainees could use for reference after they finished the online module. This made learning harder to retain, especially since trainees needed to complete a large number of modules in a short time.

Solution

The solution was to create a series of one-page job aids that trainees could download and print. In the updated version of the onboarding program, each learning module had a job aid summarizing key points and directing staff to additional resources.

Results

This job aid familiarizes new HSPRS staff with the impact of traumatic separation on mental health and family relationships of unaccompanied minors, and directs them to related resources.
