e-Learning Storyboard

Tools: PowerPoint, Vyond, Articulate Storyline, Audacity, Kaya LMS

Client: The International Rescue Committee

Collaborators: Subject Matter Experts from multiple teams

Challenge

A large multi-site nonprofit needed to update their onboarding materials during a time of rapid hiring and expansion. In addition, they wanted to improve coordination between direct service staff working on different teams. Casework staff usually specialized in one of three core programs. These programs were designed to work together and often served the same clients, but staff often had limited knowledge of the other programs. This led to problems with coordination when the same client was enrolled in more than one program.

Solution

Over the course of several months, I collaborated with trainers and subject matter experts from several teams to build a three-module e-learning course introducing new staff to the basic functions of each of the three interlocking programs. In order to make the material both memorable and relatable, we built the course around the simulated experiences of named characters representing caseworkers from each of the core programs, and we built in realistic scenarios focused on coordination issues that were particular pain points for existing staff.

The Module 1 storyboard posted here is an early draft which served as the basis for many subsequent rounds of feedback and revisions from subject matter experts across multiple teams. Though the general structure and design of the course remained similar, much of the specific content evolved over time as subject matter experts used the storyboard to refine and improve their ideas.

I served as project manager, instructional designer, e-learning course developer, graphic designer, animated video creator, and voiceover artist for this project.

Results

The final version of the e-learning course became part of the organization's standard onboarding program for new direct service staff in 28 local program offices across the United States.

Shared below is the initial storyboard for Module 1.
